After spending many years in the corporate environment in a variety of positions from administrative to executive, Mpumie decided to venture into teaching. She obtained a TESOL Certificate in 2010 from Wits Language School and in 2011 joined the WLS team as an IsiZulu trainer and administrator. She became part of the team that taught IsiZulu at Goldfields using the communicative language teaching approach. She developed IsiZulu training material for Gold Fields Mining Company, led and managed the team of IsiZulu trainers who taught IsiZulu at Gold Fields. She also wrote scripts and led a team that developed CDs and DVDs for IsiZulu lessons.
Mpumie was part of the research team that investigated mining terminology for the development of a picture dictionary and culminated in the development of IsiZulu and Sesotho picture dictionaries. In 2013 she joined the AAE Unit (African, Asian and European) where she continues to develop IsiZulu teaching material. Because of her keen interest in the IsiZulu language she successfully completed a translation course at Wits Language School in 2013, and obtained a BA Honours degree in Translation in 2017. She is currently doing a Masters’ Degree in Translation.
